Minnesota State Fair
At the end of August up until Labor Day (12 days) thousands of people head to the Minnesota State Fair grounds to eat, watch shows, compete, and general entertainment. Today, often referred to as the “Great Minnesota Get-Together,” the annual Minnesota State Fair is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.
Located mid-way between Minneapolis and St. Paul, the 322-acre Minnesota State Fairgrounds is renowned for its beautiful gardens and architecture reflecting the art deco and Works Progress Administration eras. The very first fair being in 1854. With the early fairs predominately being agricultural exhibits and competitions, reflecting its original purpose of encouraging farming in the state.
The year-round operations of the 2018 Minnesota State Fair generated $268 million in economic impact for the Twin Cities, plus additional unmeasured impact throughout the Midwest.
With nearly 300 food vendors there is something to hit any craving. Five stages, with the largest Grandstand. Having some big names like Pitbull, Earth Wind and Fire, and Jason Aldean.
I remember growing up going to the State Fair right before school starting. Being the last big thing we do. At least going once with family and once with friends. But there are some people who go for all 12 days. Hitting all the food, shopping, and just taking in all the fun.
I always go to eat myself sick. I always get corn and fries. The rest is up to what I’m feeling and what others want to share. We are passionate about our corn. There is rivalry with the other states about who has the best corn. The one thing we all agree on is that its only the Midwest, any other states we might fight if they even think they are better.
The biggest reason that schools in Minnesota cannot start until after the Fair is over is because a lot of 4-H students come to compete. Thousands of talented 4-H youth from throughout the state showcase their award-winning exhibits on topics from aerospace to fine arts to health to veterinary science and dozens of categories in between. High-energy song and dance performances, engineering challenges, and a wide range of demonstrations also fill the building. Plus separate buildings for sheep, cows, horses, pigs, and chickens.
But there is so much more for entertainment. Rides, a permanent Haunted House, shopping, and beer gardens. You will never be able to do everything in one day. But you will be hot, sweaty, full and really need sunblock.
