Art Should Not Be A Luxury
There the joke that rich kids and kids of celebrities all go into some kind of art. But people do not look into that deeply. Seeing that if people have the space to do what they want they want to create. That people want to put something out into the world.
And that tells us that art should not be inaccessible. That we should not be putting up more barriers for people to get into things. There should be a lack of knowledge out there that people can share or such a high price tag just to get into the door. Tiktok has launched some great musicians that many would have never heard without the platform. It did not discriminate from a bigger name from someone just singing in their room. If it got interaction then it was being pushed.
And newer artists are making sure to give people other options to consume their content. Most have their own social media. They post videos on Youtube. They know to make available free things. Not only is it good marketing to get people to follow, but also allows the most amount of people to just be a fan. Not all can afford to pay for a digital product, a physical product, or even a live event. Each one is a different price point.
Before getting in making videos or music you have to buy very expansive equipment or go to studio. It was hard to find information on how to do anything on your own. Now its easy for anyone to do. Our phones can do so much for us. There are so many free platforms to share on. So many ways someone independent can get paid for what they do. Even if they want to upgrade there are so many free videos out there showing people how to use programs or equipment. There so many options that you can just use on your computer. Many that are open source.
I was all self taught when it came to podcasting. I looked anything I could on editing, marketing, and just how to speak well while being interviewed. But I also found others that were more then happy to share what they knew. I have to going to Women In Podcast every month for years. Its a great space to listen and share information (hi Twila). We all helped each other from just getting start up easy ways to upgrade. This has been the same with photography and writing.
So much about the internet has been admonished for the stupid and useless things it has brought, but people will forget all the great things. We have a wealth of knowledge available to us now. So much that was kept behind closed doors. Another reason why libraries are so important. That is one of the few free spaces left. You can check out many books, but also use the internet for free. There also so many options for renting things to try for a cheaper cost then outright buying.
There is still much more to go, but more and more barriers are being pulled down. More people are getting the change to create some great works out there. And Iām even more excited to see what else comes.
