The International Wolf Center

I’ve always had a love for wolves. I almost did my major on wildlife management and research. Though I didn’t go that route I have always wanted to keep learning about them. Which is quite funny since The International Wolf Center has always been in my state. It wasn’t until after college that I was able to finally visit.

There are so many programs to participate with here. My first time I actually went for a photography weekend. Not only did we get lessons about wolves and their conservation, but we also got extra hours before they opened to have uninterrupted time to take pictures. We also got time to for a hike and learn a little about wolf tracking.

Even if you don’t want to spend a whole day at the Center, Ely has a great town to walk in and some really good restaurants. There is a lot of other nature things to do. That is where the Boundary Waters are so its great for canoeing and kayaking. Countless trails to go on. Plus other preserves in the area if you didn’t get your wildlife fix yet. The North American Bear Center, Bear Head State Park, and the Dorothy Molter Museum to name a few.

Minnesota is known for its green space and boundless amount of water. Its not called the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes for nothing. Ely is a about a three and a half drive north of the Twin Cities and about two hours from Duluth. So its a good day trip if you want to make a good northern vacation up there. Of course I take a long weekend myself. I turn it into a photography trip.

Some of the vest times to hit the International Wolf Center are in the spring and winter. Though the winter is best for wolf activity. It cooler for the wolves to be moving more but warm enough for us to be outdoors. Or course fall in Minnesota is gorgeous with the changing of the leaves. You are in the Iron Range so are surrounded by forest.
